Mix Pick: The weight of Canadian hip hop rests on Rich Kidd’s shoulders

Rich Kidd

Toronto producer and emcee Ritchie Acheampong, better known as Rich Kidd, started his career making beats for some of the city’s biggest hip hop artists, including a few tracks on Drake’s 2007 mixtape Comeback Season. But lately, Kidd has been making waves with his refined rapping skills, earning himself a Juno 2014 nomination for rap recording of the year for his mixtape In My Opinion. He’s in good company with Drake, Classified, Shad and SonReal (who he shared a nomination with last year for 2012’s collaborative album  The Closers).

Kidd’s mixtape In My Opinion showcases his street-savvy, slick approach to producing beats along with brutally honest and compelling lyrics. This release solidified Kidd’s status as one of the greats in Canadian hip hop. But his influence and talent doesn’t stop at the Canadian border  Kidd has fans all over the world, and he’s constantly collecting more.

Rich Kidd is playing a number of shows this week at SXSW, including an international beat battle on March 13. If you’re not one of the cool kids who managed to swing the trip to Austin, keep an eye on your local listings because passing on an opportunity to see Kidd would be a low down dirty shame.
