Our Story

Mixtape Magazine is a free, digital quarterly publication covering the best new Canadian music.

From folk, to hiphop, to EDM and noise, Mixtape knows no genre. Started by a small group of music bloggers and journalists in Halifax, Nova Scotia this grassroots, independent magazine strives to bring the entire Canadian music community closer to its fans by showcasing the best new and emerging artists with stunning photography, thoughtful analysis and minimalist design.

Our Canada-wide network of contributors includes industry professionals, illustrators, videographers and even the artists themselves.

We originally intended to produce a print publication, and managed to do so – for at least one issue – but the cost of printing is pretty crazy, so we’ve decided to offer the content for free in a digital format instead. We feel like this is smart because more people will see it: which is what we want anyway.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Created by a group of music loving journalism students as a class project, Mixtape’s prototype issue stole the hearts of the music industry in and around Halifax. The original team met at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It included Chelcie Soroka, Jonathan Briggins, Samantha Chown, Hilary Creamer and Ryan Hemsworth.

Lives have since evolved but Briggins, who ran the award-winning music blog The Broken Speaker for the past three years, decided to move the Mixtape project one step further. With Hilary Creamer back on board as the creative director, Briggins enlisted the help of Evelyn Hornbeck, Bill McEwen, Nicole Feriancek and Scott Blackburn to help startup a national music magazine that gives readers a really thoughtful, sincere and beautiful look inside the Canadian music scene.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

After publishing a teaser issue in the form of a Summer Festival Guide this past summer, the Mixtape crew released the first full-length issue featuring Paper Lions on the cover. This was followed by the best of 2013 summer issue. During the spring of 2013, issue #3 featuring Ottawa’s Kalle Mattson was published.

THE FUTURE

It’s nice to know more people will see our work now that we’re producing a free, digital publication but ultimately, we’d like to print something. We really believe that people want something tangible to collect and share and cozy up with. But what form that something takes can be directly influenced by you (we’ve bandied about the idea of a Canadian music yearbook). So write to us by using the contact form below and tell us what kind of a print product you’d like to see and, maybe, how much you’d pay for it.
