Every Wednesday we like to treat you to some new sounds. We suss out some of the latest bands, musicians and artists that you may not have heard of but that we think you should check out. This week we would like to kindly introduce you to Montreal’s AroarA.
A side project for Broken Social Scene/Apostle of Hustle member Andrew Whiteman and his wife Ariel Engle, AroarA combines the creative mixture of sounds Broken Social Scene is so well known for with something a little more electric sounding. In their own words, they “currently work in the spirit/science of sonic gene splicing.”
Trying to explain their sound is a little tricky. But, taking a stab at it, they are what The Postal Service could have sounded like if they stuck around and then had a musical baby with Austra.
The duo released an EP in July – five songs from their upcoming album In The Pines. Set to be released in just a few short weeks, the whole album is inspired by – and pulls words from – a 2007 book of poetry by American poet Alice Notley by the same name. Plus the whole thing was recorded in a series of living rooms across Canada, which is a pretty inclusive way to make a record, don’t you think?
Set to appear at the upcoming New Brunswick festival, SappyFest, the band is only gaining speed as they have nearly 20 shows booked at various venues across the country between now and November.
