Mix pick Pop Montreal: Getting real big with Big Dick

With a name like that, this band has a lot to live up to.

Ottawa’s Big Dick makes big noise for being just two guys rocking out on the drums and bass. Bandmates Johnny O and Dave Secretary combine their talents to create something that is tucked between hard rock and punk, with a few prog elements thrown in for fun.

Even though they formed in 2009, the rock duo debuted their self-titled full-length album in February, 2013 to mild success. However, as they have been playing the festival circuit throughout Eastern Canada, they’ve been collecting fans faster than ever. They are making a name as Canada’s answer to the Josh Homme-cultivated sound heard in The Queens of The Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures – it’s heavy, almost screamo at times, but still caries a distinct melody.

Interesting factoid worth sharing at dinner parties: The name Big Dick actually comes from a song by B.C. punk rockers NoMeansNo.

To listen, and see, the way two friends manage to pull off such a huge punk rock sound with nothing more than a bass and a drum kit, catch them at Pop Montreal September 25-29.
