Mix Pick Charlottetown Pop: These cuts are Whale Skin deep

Whale Skin Charlottetown Pop Explosino

Every week Mixtape likes to introduce you to a new band or musician we think you should get to know and keep an eye on. Charlottetown Pop is gearing up to celebrate their inaugural year so we thought we would introduce you to some of the bands playing the festival. This week, we showcase Whale Skin – a side project for Willow Bell of The Belle Comedians, who has spent his free time developing his production and DJ skills.

Splitting time between Halifax and Fredericton, Bell found inspiration by hanging out with, and performing, alongside Canadian electro-lovers like Paper Lions and Jenocide. From here, he honed his skills and found influences in funk, old school R&B and other classic hip hop fodder. Wanting to expand his vision into full band arrangements, Bell enlisted a number of his friends to help him turn the dream into the electro-reality that is Whale Skin.

What you end up with is a sound dressed up in a brightly coloured and stylishly coordinated power suit.

Recently, Bell and his gang of friends had the chance to remix one of A.A. Wallace’s tunes (he’s also from Halifax).

But perhaps the reason you should go see Whale Skin live is because you’ll hear remixes of hip hop favourites, mind blowing originals and everything in between. No one can bother standing still when these guys take the stage – you will dance uncontrollably. It’s a fact.
