Mix Picks Pop Montreal: Getting a little boy/girl action with Young Benjamins

Young Benjamins

Despite the fact that Saskatoon’s Young Benjamins have been together since 2009, is would seem that this is a year of good fortune for the foursome – they got signed to a label (Dollartone Records), released their first full length album in May and were invited to play a whole whack of summer music festivals. Things just keep getting bigger and better for them.

It’s been their brand of indie-folk, which mixes violin flourishes and robust vocals from lead singer Neusha Mofazzali with dashes of math-rock rhythms, that has been catchy enough captivate even the most discerning crowds.

The band, made up of equal parts male and female, released a three-song EP, Bones, in 2011, offering listeners a glimpse of what the band was capable of. And with the release of Less Argue in 2013, the group managed to show off the full range of their talents. Featuring songs that are both masculine and feminine in nature, the album showcases the band’s ability to write songs that balance strong instrumentation and creative vocal harmonies.

Currently touring Canada’s Western Provinces, the band is taking a quick jump east to play this weekend’s Pop Montreal where they will, most likely, host an entertaining evening filled with small personal quips about families and friends and tunes that will stick around in your head for days.
