Mix Picks Squamish: West coast favourites, Yukon Blonde

This week’s Mix Pick is hoping to expose you to a band that you probably have already heard of: Yukon Blonde. Yeah, that’s right. You’ve probably alrady heard these boys and probably know the breakaway hit “My Girl,” but I bet you know very little about them beyond that damn catchy tune. Right?

Hailing from Vancouver (although originally from Kelowna B.C.) the band, who at one point called themselves Alphababy, has been making music, recording and touring back and forth across the country since 2005. After changing their name to Yukon Blonde, they released an EP in 2009 and followed it up with a self-titled debut album in 2010. Since then, the band has established themselves with their classic rock, vintage sound and a string of hard core fans across the country.

While the boys haven’t really altered their sound, or their image, they’ve managed to let things mature. Releasing an EP and their latest album, Tiger Talk, they present a pristine balance of catchy, radio friendly tunes with some more gutsy sounds, filling out their spot on the Canadian scene.

Oh – and they work hard. They live and breathe their music and are either touring or recording a new EP, like the Fire/Water EP, released in 2011.

Recently, nearly eight years after they formed, they are finally getting some serious pay-off for thier hard work. Just last year, Canadian Tourism used that ever popular tune, “My Girl” for an international campaign, helping them find some internatinoal attention of their own.

You can catch these boys at Squamish Valley Music Festival this weekend. If not, chances are they will be playing in your city / town at least three times in the upcoming year.
