Ottawa Bluesfest mix pick: Loon Choir

Loon Choir is one of Ottawa’s best secrets, and I have a feeling Ottawa likes it that way. This indie rock band is as accessible as it is artistically interesting. This is the kind of band you could bring your dad to, and he’d tap his foot as you appreciate their poetic lyrics and unique sound. They mix prog-rock with pop hooks and it’s infectious.

The band has been together since 2009, and their eclectic membership is no accident. Derek Atkinson (guitar/vocals) and Brad Sheffield (synth) wanted to create a rich sound with many layers, so they advertised online, recruited friends and even taught a roommate to play bass. They have two albums, Expansion Forces (2010) and Fire Poems (2012).

Violin as a featured instrument might make you think of slow, quiet music, but that is not Loon Choir. Kathleen Cauley’s bow never seems to slow or stop, and plays a big role pushing the songs forward. Their set will not give you a minute to breathe (even if you want one).

Loon Choir plays Ottawa Bluesfest on Friday July 12.

Take a listen to “All Boats Don’t Rise” from Fire Poems.
