Soundcheck: Constantines reunion, The Weeknd remixes Beyoncé and more

The Constantines celebrate Shine A Light’s 11th birthday

The Constantines have been on hiatus for over three years now. And while last year was the tenth anniversary of their most critically acclaimed album Shine A Light, they have decided to make the eleventh anniversary the memorable one. Last week, singer and guitarist Bry Webb announced in a blog post the album will be reissued and more importantly, the band will be getting back together for a handful of shows. Since the the band’s hiatus, members have kept busy with various solo projects including Baby Eagle (Steve Lambke), Woolly Leaves (Will Kidman) and Bry Webb (performing under his own name).

The Weeknd joins the Beyoncé remix train

The trendiest song to remix in 2014 has been Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love” (from her self-titled surprise album that came out in December, but you already know that since you don’t live under a rock). R&B artist The Weeknd is the latest to jump in on the remix action, providing his own version compute with his falsetto vocals. Other artists who have recently remixed the track include Kayne West, Diplo, James Black, Angel Haze and Future.

Chromeo shares album release date in a creative way

On Valentine’s Day, Montreal electrofunk duo Chromeo announced the release date of their new album White Women via a missed connections ad on Craigslist.  The new album, featuring guest appearances from Solange, Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), Pat Maloney (LCD Soundsystem), has been hyped since last fall but the May 12 date was a mystery until the Craigslist post.

Solids latest album out today

Montreal band Solids release their album Blame Confusion Dine Alone Records today. You can read a review of the album by Michael McGrath on page 8 of Mixtape’s Winter 2013 issue.

“The album leaves you with a sense of completion, creating an entire sound and breaking it down in only 38 minutes. Solids fits in perfectly with bands such as Metz and Japandroids, but at the same time they don’t fit in at all. They’re special, they’re their own band, they deserve their own lane.”

Kathleen Edwards is still a musician

Last week Ottawa’s Kathleen Edwards gave her fans a scare with a Facebook post that started with the line “I’m really sorry but I’m pretty sure I don’t want to make music anymore”. The Internet was sad and music news sites wrote stories about her calling it quits.  She later clarified that she’s not quitting music but needed to take a step back. It’s worth noting she joined Blue Rodeo on stage in Ottawa on Valentine’s Day.
