Grab your Spiderman backpack and burn a mix CD for back to school. It’s Tuesday, the day where Mixtape tells you about new music from Canada’s finest artists.
- Kalle Mattson from Ottawa is gearing up to release his third album (he of the viral videos Water Falls and Thick As Thieves). No name yet, but we do now it was produced by Gavin Gadiner of The Wooden Sky, with performances by Jeremy Fisher, The Wooden Sky, and Cuff the Duke. Before the third album comes out in early 2014, Mattson is releasing a new 7″ An American Dream/Darkness, available October 1.
- Montreal’s The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) has a new album out, Kiss land. The Weeknd has previously made mixtape-style free download albums, but after a bump from a Drake endorsement the second and third releases basically broke the internet when they dropped. Bad news is this one is for money, but the good news is it’s streaming free on NPR.
- Beta Frontiers released a remix of “Better” by Odonis Odonis. Both are from Toronto, and both are working together creatively, along with members of Hooded Fang and side project Phèdre. Basically this track comes out of the soup of an extremely creative crew of Torontonians, and it whets our appetite for more.
- East coaster Rose Cousins has announced an upcoming tour and recently released a new video for her song “For The Best”. Filmed at her annual writing retreat with pals on an island in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire , it’s just the thing for some end of summer reminiscing.
- Fear not: though the summer festival season has passed, there’s great music to look forward to at the Halifax Pop Explosion. They just released their full lineup and the city is buzzing. With awesome headliners already, some great new acts were added including DIANA, Islands, and English Words. Mixtape will be offering full coverage working with HPX, and we’ll bring you along for the ride.
