Soundcheck: Rob Ford steals a seat from Matt Mays and Jay Malenowski pays tribute to his heritage

Every week, Mixtape pulls together the latest and newest sounds, albums and news from the national music scene in what we call the Soundcheck. And this week’s Soundcheck surely won’t disappoint.

How about we kick things off with a story about Canadian Rocker Matt Mays and his brush with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford? According to various reports, the infamous Toronto Mayor stole a seat from Mays at an NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Falcons at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. After tweeting about the situation, Mays told his story to the National Post, saying ““The poor usher guy was like, ‘dude, I don’t really know what to tell you right now — Mayor Rob Ford is in your seat, bro,’” Mays said. “It was kind of entertaining.” An hour after the incident began, Mays tweeted that he got his seat back but provided no details as to how.

Burlington punk rockers The Penske File released a new video for their song “Chorus o’ Time/Battered Boats” yesterday. Both songs appear on the trio’s full-length debut, A Restless Symphony, which was released on April 26, 2013.

Jay Malinowski & The Deadcoast released the first single from their upcoming album, Martel, yesterday. The vocalist and guitarist from Toronto’s Bedouin Soundclash took an interest in learning his family’s heritage and the concept album weaves the story of his grandfather, Charles Martel, who was a sailor travelling around the Maritimes, Europe and the Atlantic. The album is paired with a website, featuring a map that will take the listener through Martel’s various adventures and voyages.

Last week, Halifax hip hop artist Kayo released a new video for his song, “Rich Already.” The song is featured on his latest EP S.L.A.V.E (Serenity Lives Around Virtuous Energy). Look closely and you’ll see that Kayo has a wealth of cash – only it’s Canadian Tire money.
