Soundcheck: Fraser Valley music scene compilation, Hand Drawn Dracula tape and Kestrels

Get to know the Fraser Valley music scene

As you’ve probably noticed, Mixtape Magazine is all about Canadian music. Part of why we love the Canadian music scene so much is because there are so many thriving communities from coast to coast. Living in Halifax, I don’t get to check out the Fraser Valley music scene on the regular (and my guess is neither do you unless you live in the area.) That’s why it’s great when folks such as Adam from Birds of Canada puts together a compilation documenting the scene. Fraser Valley is an area in B.C. consisting of Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Langley and Aldergrove. While there isn’t much metal/hardcore and punk music included on this mix, expect a compilation encompassing those genres sometime next year.

Free compilation from Hand Drawn Dracula

Toronto label Hand Drawn Dracula have a special mixtape they’re releasing to show off their talented roster. It features Cousins, Dusted, By Divine Right, Bruce Peninsula and more. The HDD XIV Summer Cassette will be available at the label’s NXNE Showcase this week. If you can’t get your hands on a physical copy, it’s available to download for free until June 24th. The download code can be found on the label’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

New EP on its way from Kestrels

Halifax band Kestrels’s new EP The Moon Is Shining Our Way comes out on July 1st via Sonic Unyon Records. The EP is produced by Alex Bonenfant who has worked with Metz and Crystal Castles. You can check out the fuzzy pop rock first single below.

Correction: Mixtape originally said Kestrels was called Kestrals. Spelling has been changed throughout the article with the correct name.
