Soundcheck: New music from Dog Day, Maz and an announcement from Rufus Wainwright

As we get closer and closer to the end of 2013, the music industry tends to slow down a bit. But slowing down and coming to a complete halt are two completely different things and there are still a bunch of new sounds and new albums to check out in this week’s Soundcheck.

Halifax rockers Dog Day have a new album out today. The album, called Fade Out features classic rock elements with subtle, lucid twists and a lo-fi sound that’s bound to remind the listener of the plaid-laden grunge scene of the mid-90s.

Last week, Montreal music-makers Maz released Chasse-Galerie on December 4. Known for blending traditional Quebecois instrumentation, such as the fiddle and banjo, with electronica and jazz, Maz brings an insatiable energy to their second album.

While in the middle of composing an opera, Rufus Wainwright announced he’ll release a “best of” album March 3, 2014, featuring 18 career-spanning tracks—starting with his eponymous 1998 debut. The new compilation, Vibrate: The Best Of Rufus Wainwright, will also feature a new song called “Me & Liza.”
